Basenji or Portuguese Water Dog?
which out of these two breeds would be best for someone with a dog allergy?
Many sites state that Basenji’s are fine for allergic people but then the kennle club (uk) site says that it’s not suitable for people with allergies
the portuguese water dog is good for people with allergies though and there is no site anywhere that says anything other than that it’s fine for people with allergies even though it does shed a bit like all animals with fur do.
so do Basenjis shed more than PWDs?

They both shed & are both two very different breeds of dog.
Both are high energy dogs that take a lot of obedience & a certain type of owner to deal with them.
You can be allergic to one dog & not other one of the same breed so you can’t generalize as to which breed is better for a person with allergies. There are different types of allergies to dogs & different levels of severity so it is all individual to each person & dog. Basenjis drop hair everywhere & PWD need major brushing & grooming to maintain their coat. Their coats are similar to a poodle where the hair doesn’t drop much on the floor but instead gets caught in their curly coats & mats very quickly.
You need to decide first what type of dog you are interested instead of going by just what someone else considers to be hypo-allergenic or by looks. Their personalities & behavior & the health issues & costs associated with each breed are important issues then see what breed might work with your particular type of allergy – dander, saliva or hair.
I think you should look at the akc site and read about each dog….dont choose a dog only because of its allergen issue…..because the two breeds are very different in temperament , care. They both are good for people with allergies…but maybe one is more suitable to your lifestyle than the other.
