Portuguese water dog or Italian?
Hi! so my family and i are thinking about getting a dog. My mom is allergic. So we looked into two breeds: Portuguese water dog and Italian water dog. Last weekend we borrowed a IWD, and it worked out really well! but i was just wondering if anyone knew if the PWD is better or not? thanks in advance!

By Italian Water Dog do you mean the Lagotto Romagnolo? I’ve looked into them as well. You actually have a large selection of dogs to choose from if you are looking for breeds that don’t shed. There is also the spanish water dog and the Barbet (french water dog). There are also a large number of non-water dogs. I have 2 pwds-one curly and one wavy. All of the other breeds mentioned above are wavy and, in the case of the swd, sometimes the hair is even corded. I have 2 things for you to consider. First-I think there are only a small hand full of swd breeders in the US (are you in the US?). There are not barbet breeders any more and I doubt there are more than one of 2 italian breeders. These breeds are more rare and closer to their working temperaments. The PWD has become much more popular and there are a large number of responsible breeders who have worked to balance the working and companion temperament of this breed. The other thing to consider (and this is just my opinion) the wavy coated pwd is much easier to maintain. The curly coat requires a lot more attention. Both coats need to be cut, but the wavy coat is very easy to comb out. The curly coat–even when there are no tangles–can be very dense and time consuming.
Portuguese Water dog They are good for people with allergies.
Portie coats are MUCH easier to deal with and maintain… just as a thought, if you are interested in EITHER of these breeds you must be prepared to spend $60 – 70 A MONTH in grooming. Make sure you have that in your "puppy budget"
Porties have nicer temperments, and are a little bit larger then the lagattos.
Also have a look at the Spanish Water Dogs, a very nice breed as well. I have been led to believe that Porties have better temperaments. Whilst both breeds can cost a lot with regards to grooming you can eventually learn to clip and groom him yourself if you wish. I think the classic Portie ‘Lion Cut’ looks fantastic, if a little unusual to the untrained eye, but most people seem to have the Retriever Cut which is a shame. I prefer the wavy coat to the curly coat, it would be a good idea to check with the breeder.
