Any Portuguese water dog owners out there?
Can i have some info on them from an owners point of view?
I want to know their general tempermant, how easily their trained, hoe much exercise they need and other stuff like that.

I have two great Portuguese Water Dogs.
My female would obviously be the smarter one. She is incredibly easy to train and in fact, I just taught her how to "take a bow!"
In terms of exercise requirements, it varies depending on the breeder. In the breed standard, it says that they are robust strong willed dogs that are very energetic, and some breeders really do look for those hyper dogs to breed, however, my breeder focused on conformation and temperament…so we did not necessarily get the high strung dogs that are difficult to care for.
What I have noticed though in the breed is that some of the dogs (like mine) tend to have more sensitive stomachs, and that requires better dog food.
I think they are great dogs…absolutely superb and if you are considering purchasing one, you will not be disappointed.
Note: Since they are not as common as say, Labs, they tend to be a bit pricier. I know I paid 2500 for mine…but it was all worth it!
If you have any questions, you can email me and I will do my best to answer any thing else that might "pop" into your mind!
Best to go straight to the source. Reputable breeders and rescues will tell you the good as well as the bad.
Links to the national breed club and rescue are in the source box. I’ve always been interested in the breed — nice dogs.
Portuguese water dogs (as well as cocker spaniels and dobermans) require taurine – an amino acid. I learned the hard way with my cocker who died of dilated cardiomyopathy due to taurine deficiency. Make sure the food contains it or give a supplement.
