How should i care for my 9 week old german shepherd puppy?
Hello: I have just brought home a new puppy, a german shepherd. He is 9 weeks old. How much time should I spend with him a day? Is it ok to have him outside for any period of the day? (The temperature is about 9 degrees, its March and spring in Canada) Does he have to be with me all day? He is whining quite a lot, its the second day we’ve had him, and he was crying all night it seemed;/ it was a hard night – I appreciate your advice, thanks.

Puppies need constant attention or they will wine. You should give your puppy a good puppy food (the first 2 ingredents should be meat, not bi-products) you should play with your puppy a lot and start training him to do the basics like sit, stay, come… your puppy will probably be fine outside with suppervision but if he starts to shiver bring him in. oh yeah and get his vaccinations
It’s a bit cold to leave him outside, but of course a couple of nice longs walks a day would be fine.
The most important thing with a 9 week old puppy is to start his vaccinations, they’re due.

He’s a little guy and wll need you around alot. but get his shots soon. Don’ t take him outside yet, it’s still alittle cold.
I do agree with a reply here that you shouldn’t get a pet if you don’t know what the deal is. But since you brought home one, we’ll just have to make do.
Take your puppy for his shot, and try to have him indoor for this time. Spend as much time as you can with him because he is in a new surrounding. At night give him some comfy blanky or old clothes for him to sleep in if you don’t have a dog bed yet. When you go to sleep and can’t comfort it at night, have a small analog clock next to the puppy. I don’t know if this will work for you but I usually calm whining puppies down. I don’t know if it’s the ticking sound.
Give him walks and exercise everyday.
Make an effort to give your puppy the best now that you got one. Having a dog is a commitment so you should be ready to spend some time with him.
I’d spend as much time as possible with him especially the first few days so he can get used to you as his new family. If its that cold I’d only let him out for five or ten minutes at a time and supervised…my dogs ears get frostbite sometimes. If you can’t be with him all day I’d invest in a crate…they’re great housetraining tools. He will whine a lot because everything is new to him. I remember reading at night you can put a warm water bottle in his bed to keep him warm, a small clock that ticks with him(sounds like a heartbeat). That’s supposed to sooth them. Hopefully that helps! Good luck with your new puppy, he sounds great!
