How much does a Portuguese water dog cost?
Like the one Obama’s getting?
I’m definitely not planning on getting one – I’m just curious as to what they cost, because I overheard that they are expensive!

Most quality breeders will want between $1500 and $2000 for a PWD. For this money you will expect that the breeder has had numerous tests done for genetic problems and has started socializing the dog to a variety of environments and experiences. Though expensive on the front end, a well bred puppy can save you thousands over the lifetime of the dog by minimizing the risk that the dog will need treatment for anxiety, bad hips, bad eyes, seizures, allergies, etc.
A quality breeder does their part to prevent unwanted dogs by requiring that you return the dog to them if you can not keep it for any reason.
I don’t want to imply that I don’t support getting rescue or pound dogs. Just that there is a reason why quality breeders ask so much more than puppy mills or backyard breeders.
If you are getting one only because Obama has one, then don’t. They are not a breed for everyone-so do you research and don’t just follow a fad.
just because Obama got one dosen’t mean it’s the right breed for you! They are uncommon so probably expensive.
And I hope now that the Obamas have one the breed won’t suffer.
Just like dalamtions in 101 dalmations
Labs in Marley and Me (they were breeding bad labs before this, as you can see how the grogans got that inbred dog and named a strain of Lab, the badly bred Marley Labs)
Or Siberian Husky in 8 below! (lots of rescues this year)
Beagles in Shiloh!
Golden Retrievers in Airbud!
Collies in Lassie(shelties got hit hard too)
Saint Brenards in Beetoven!
BeveryHills Chihuahau(it will start)
And Hotel for dogs, the movie about recues….. that featured no mutts!
Oh great……………. Poor porties!
*sigh*
and so it begins…
It depends where you get the dog from.
Breeders may charge a little more, depending if their nice, and I wouldn’t support pet stores.
The cheapest would be animal shelters.
=)
Yeah, and don’t just get one cause the Obama’s are getting one. They need special attention, and special care.
RELAY!!!!!!
Please do some research on the breed before you make any hasty designs.
Obama will not even be training it he will take tax payers money and higher a trainer.
So in all in all you already own one. And all you have to do is help pay for it…….
More than you could afford. These aren’t a common breed and damn near impossible to find in the rescues. Just because the president has one and its cute doesn’t make it the dog for you.
they are not very common.. you can expect to pay well over $1,000 for a pet-quality one.
I paid $2,000 each for my 2 pwds. I have met 2 other breeders who charged $1,700 and $1,800, but those figures are in the same ball field. But now that they are getting so much press, I’m sad to say that puppy mills will probably start churning out poorly bred pwds for quite a bit less. In the 1970s there were only 25 left world wide. Breed advocates have worked incredibly hard to get a good healthy gene pool going. This will not be a good thing for the breed.
