How do you get a dog potty trained when living on the third floor apratment?
I live on the third floor of my apartment and i have a small weiner dog puppy. All i have is a balcony and I don’t know where or how I should get my dog to go potty somewhere else but in the apartment. I heard of crate training but im not sure how to do that or if anyone has any other suggestions please!

Is that really fair to have got a dog and be living in an apartment? However I have seen a dog trained to actually use the toilet you do, you good use a litter tray until then….

Either teach the dog to go outside or get a large litter box and train him to use that. Although if you don’t keep it super clean it does tend to smell REALLY bad.
one thing you can do is get puppy pads that have a special pheramones on them that attract you dog to them. dont use crate training for potty training thats two way different things. try the pads. they worked on my dogs
Take your dog out often also when you see it circling or starting to sniff. Can you rig something on your balcony? Some people do litter train their dogs just like cats
Just like you train any other dog. You just have to WALK it even though the steps might be a pain. Feed it at certain times and walk it afterward. Don’t leave food down for it all the time. At night, only leave a small amount of water with a few ice cubes in the bowl, so it doesn’t drink a lot (but still has enough) during the night. Really, it’s only 3 stories. That’s not all that horrible. Praise him/her when they go outside and be sure you’re getting it out there often enough.
Crate training isn’t the same as potty training. Take your dog outside regularly and reward it with praise when it goes to the toilet where you want it to go. I don’t think the balcony is a good idea, unless in emergencies. Make sure you take the dog out after every meal, every nap, every game and a few more times for luck! He’ll soon get the message if you are consistent and don’t leave him on his own for more than about 2 hours in these early days.
That’s a tough situation he might not be able to get all the way outside before he bursts
This is the only situation I would recommend wee wee pads.
Only place them outside on your balcony, You may have to tape them down, Kennel train & weewee pads outside then as he gets older he’ll be able to hold it till you can get all the way down 3 floors
I had friends in my old appartment building who had two dachshunds and managed to potty train them. It all goes into what you can afford and your patience level for walking her down those stairs. But a few quick tips I learned from them include:
1. Litter training. It sounds strange because its a dog, and dogs dont generally use the litter box, but it really worked for my neighbors. Teach your puppy to go in the box, just like you would a cat. This minimizes accidents when you may be away for longer periods of time. Although, I can imagine it would get stinky, so you would be speanding alot of time cleaning up. Also I definately do not recomend this if you have children. Yuck
2. In the pet store they have puppy mats. They have a smell (not a repulsive one that will stink up your appt) that makes the puppys want to potty on them. Also a good idea for when you may be away for the longer periods of time. Dachshunds are not good at holding it. My neighbors used to use the puppy mats when thier pup was really tiny, and then started taking them outdoors with them on thier walks, so the puppy could potty outside, but it was a kind of slow transition.
3. And my best idea, because this is how I trained my Dachshund, buy a kennel. Take the puppy out as much as possible, and keep treats on you so she is rewarded IMMEDIATELY after pottying outdoors. Then she will get the clue. When you are gone, keep her in her "room". It works great. Dogs are not likely to want to go to the bathroom where they sleep. And all they do while we are away is sleep anyhow, (that and knock over the trash.) My dog loves her kennel and she sleeps in it even when I am home with the door open.
I never used the mats or litter, but they were ideas that worked for my neighbors. I always though that leaving a mat for the puppy to go on was encouraging her to potty inside, and making it more confusing for the dog. Plus I dont think it would be sanitary. Perhaps try on on your balcany? (As long as the pup cant slip through the bars) That way you arent stinking the place up. I hope you have some luck! Kennels are expensive, but theyre worth it in the long run!
